7.7 UK’s comparative Advantage in Services Exports: An EU-Wide Comparison

Trade in services statistics for the UK have largely been subsumed under data reported for the EU 28, due to the UK’s membership of that group during the period of assessment. Some data on the UK’s performance, however, is available in comparative formats such as in Figure 21 above, which shows the UK’s performance against its now former treaty partners in the EU. The data affords a one-off snapshot of the performance of the UK against other globally competing European States, and suggests areas of the UK’s own comparative advantage. As indicated in Figure 20 , the UK was clearly a top player in the establishment of foreign affiliates (Mode 3) for the supply of services globally, in 2017, having tied for seventh place with Finland and Denmark among the EU28. The UK, however, was twelfth from the bottom (17 th place) in relation to Mode 1 supply of services and only performed better than six (6) EU countries in relation to the supply of services via Mode 4. The UK, however, was tied for fourth from the bottom of the table in relation to its Mode 2 supply of services globally, including to other EU markets, when compared to its other partners in the EU.
