Source: EUROSTAT Note: Estimates using the simplified Eurostat model. Modes 1, 2 and 4: ITSS exports, adjusted by excluding goods and including distribution services from trade in goods statistics to mode 1. Mode 3: outward FATS data. Missing data were estimated.
When other EU member States are excluded from the picture, the UK’s rankings in relation to its exports to non-EU countries via Mode 3 remain the same as when EU data is included, having tied for seventh overall. The UK, however, ranked 10 th from the bottom of the standings for Mode 4 exports, 9 th from the bottom in terms of Mode 1 and 6 th from the bottom in terms of Mode 2 exports of services. In the assessment of the UK’s comparative advantage in the exports of services globally, relative to the EU, it therefore appears that the UK is a much stronger performer in relation to outbound investment in the supply of services (i.e., Mode 3) to the EU and internationally, but performs poorly across all other modes of supply when compared to its then EU partners, suggesting that Mode 3 is indeed an area of comparative advantage for that country in the export of services both in its immediate region and globally.
