2.1.2 Description of the Primary Survey Instrument

The survey instrument was designed as an online data-gathering tool, via SurveyMonkey, to collect

both quantitative (via close-ended and numerical items) and qualitative (through open-ended

items) data from representatives of targeted businesses within each country of the CARIFORUM

community. The survey questions and response options were built based on findings from the desk

research. The final survey instrument comprised several sections:

• Section A – this section sought essential demographic information of businesses including

their country of primary operation, organisational size (by employee headcount), and their

exporting status (whether exporter or not). A follow-up question was posed to exporters

on the nature and types of difficulties they were currently experiencing in their exporting

activities.

• Section B - this section captured key information on the businesses’ primary economic

sector of operation as well as any sector-specific training needs for which they might want

support. Other crucial aspects of this section requested that respondents identify the most

needed areas of technical and soft skills training for their businesses. Finally, they were

asked to rank these specific categories of training from most to least important.
