Guyana’s Skills Needs for Green Jobs
• Anticipated green jobs identified by participants across various sectors included environmental health officers, forest rangers, civil engineers, cartographer, electricians, technicians, computer operators and lecturers. • Skills gaps identified in Guyana’ s Second National Communication to the UNFCCC include - Undertaking and interpreting climate change projections - Conducting research on the vulnerability of key sectors and regions to the impacts of climate change - Implementing and maintaining the technologies and equipment necessary to monitor climate change and climate-related impacts - Developing technologies like sea defenses, irrigation systems and early warning systems which are critical to successful adaptation.
• Expertise/specialized areas identified where skills are needed include: - GIS and Remote Sensing - Climate Change and Climate Modeling - Hydrology (Water Resource Management) - Ground Water Management - Renewable Energy (biofuels, solar energy, hydroelectricity etc.) - Agriculture Resources Management - Sustainable Forestry - Natural Resources Management - Food and Nutrition Technology - Land Use Planning - Biodiversity Inventory and DNA Analysis.
• Guyana Energy Agency identified the following emerging job roles stemming from Guyana’s shift to a green economy Guyana Energy Agency (GEA): - O & M technicians for renewable energy projects - Energy/environmental economists - Financial analysts - Hydropower design engineers - Energy auditors - GIS technicians - Biochemical engineers - Project managers with knowledge of clean and renewable energy - Engineers for wind, biomass, and hydropower project development - Engineering technicians (electrical & mechanical)
