A Caribbean Social Innovation Guide

Country Profile Snapshots

Trinidad & Tobago

01 . Understanding Social Innovation in the Caribbean

Trinidad and Tobago possess substantial innovation assets. Supported by a strong industrial base, a sophisticated financial sector and respected research institutions (beyond Universities, such as CARIRI and NIHERST), the country has the knowledge, technical expertise and infrastructure to tackle complex social challenges. Community organisations, businesses and social enterprises are also actively developing solutions that improve livelihoods, strengthen communities and support more inclusive economic growth. Despite these strengths, the ecosystem is challenged with limited integration and a lack of coordination. Many organisations are delivering excellent work, yet often operate independently rather than as part of a connected national

ecosystem. Smaller groups and organisations can struggle to meet funding, reporting and administrative requirements, leaving them excluded from some opportunities for support in delivering programmes or developing new ideas. Women continue to play a leading role in community-based organisations, but barriers remain to equal participation in leadership, investment and higher-growth sectors. Trinidad and Tobago’s greatest opportunity lies in connecting its strengths. By bringing together its industrial capabilities, creative economy, digital transformation agenda and community innovation, the country is well positioned to develop scalable social innovation models that create lasting impact both nationally and across the Caribbean.
